The Miami Green Commission was formed to guide and mold the City’s environmental policy. Members of the Green Commission represent a cross section of local content experts and community enthusiasts.

The Urban Forestry Working Group of the Green Commission leads the City’s urban forestry initiatives. In 2007, the Urban Forestry Working Group and City staff finalized a City Tree Master Plan as a framework to restore and enhance the City’s tree canopy. The Green Miami campaign is based on recommendations outlined in the Tree Master Plan.

The vision for the Green Miami Campaign is to restore and enhance the City of Miami’s tree canopy into a thriving urban forest that provides multiple aesthetic and environmental benefits. The long-term goal is to increase the City of Miami’s tree canopy to 30% by 2017.

The Green Miami Campaign is a partnership to engage property owners, renters, businesses, and governmental entities (including schools) in the planting and maintenance of the City’s trees. Partners in this campaign include:

• Home Depot Foundation;
• the City of Miami;
• Hands on Miami;
• TREEmendous Miami;
• Treeman Trust;
• Operation Green Leaves;
• Citizens for a Better South Florida;
• Roots in the City;
• Miami-Dade County;
• the South Florida Water Management District;
• American Forests; and
• thousands of volunteers.

Funding for tree plantings are provided by the City of Miami Tree Trust Fund as well as generous donations from the Home Depot Foundation.
